John (Jonas) Swegsda

John (Jonas) Swegsda was born in 1911. It is not clear where he was born but his younger siblings were all born, from 1913 until 1928, in Auchinleck. Perhaps he was born in Poland where his parents originated from. John and his father were coalminers.

John married Annie De Sykes (or Kalwaitis) on 22nd July 1947 at St Thomas Roman Catholic Church, Muirkirk. The Marriage Certificate states: John (Jonas) Swegsda age 37yrs, coalminer, bachelor, 114 Dalsalloch, Auchinleck. His father is Matthew Swegsda, coalminer and his mother is Francisis Waitkuke. His bride is Ann Kalwaitis known as De Sykes age 29yrs, 44 Linkieburn, Muirkirk, housekeeper, spinster whose father is Anthony Kalwaitis, railway surfaceman and her her mother is Mary Kalwaitis ms Stakalik deceased. The witnesses are William Swegsda, 120 Dalsalloch, Auchinleck and Margaret De Sykes, 1296 Maryhill Road, Glasgow.

N.B. There seems to have been various spellings of John's mother's maiden name eg. Wailkule,         

         Wailkula etc. Waitkuke seems to be the one favoured by SP index.

After their marriage John and Annie lived in Hut No. 112 Pennylands from 1949-1951.

John Swegsda died  5th August 1964 at 16 Ballochmyle Avenue, Auchinleck, age 53yrs, coalminer married to Annie De Sykes. Father: Matthew Swegsda, coalminer deceased. Mother: Frances Swegsda ms Wailkule decd. Informant: John Bryden, brother-in-law, 2 Hillside Crescent, Auchinleck.

The Lithuanian Connection

John's wife Annie Kalwaitis later De Sykes was born 9/5/1918 at 48 Linkieburn, Muirkirk and died 15/2/2012 in Auchinleck. Her parents were:

Father: Antonio (Anthony) Kalwaitis who was born about 1869 in Suvalkan, Vilkaviskis, Lithuania and died 27th June 1960 at 2 Hillside Crescent, Auchinleck. He later changed the family name to De Sykes.

Mother: Maria (Mary) Stakalis or Stakelik who was born abt 1874 in Krakow, Poland and died 6/4/1945 at Linkieburn Square, Muirkirk.

 Why did Lithuanians come to Scotland?  

                      

Lithuanians began to arrive in Scotland in small numbers in the 1870s but by the 1890s they were arriving  in larger numbers. Their reasons for coming were varied. Some were agricultural workers who had been recruited by the agents of Scottish coal and iron companies such as Baird and wanted to leave Lithuania because of the poverty there. Many of these were 'stage migrants' who, once they had saved enough money, would move on to another country such as America. Others were escaping the Russification policies  and some were escaping conscription  into the Russian Army.

The Lithuanians were not made welcome in Scotland. They were met with discrimination and hostility because they were seen as competition for jobs and were prepared to work for less money than the Scottish miners. The employers were often accused of using them as strike breakers. Even Keir Hardie led a fierce xenophobic campaign against them. They spoke poor or no English and were devout Catholics in a fiercely Presbyterian Scotland. They were routinely referred to as 'Poles' or 'Russian Poles'. Many had their names changed by immigration officers at the pits but many voluntarily changed their names in a bid to avoid harassment and fit in with Scottish society more easily. The family of John Swegsda's  wife Annie Kalwaitis, later De Sykes, was an examples of this.

Marksymilian Kuberski

Marksymilian Kuberski, a tinsmith to trade,  was born in 1920. I am assuming he was born in Poland because he was a Corporal in the Polish Army.  He died in 1974 in Auchinleck.

He married Jane Donnelly, a local girl, on 15th June 1946. Jane's parents were probably Irish but I cannot verify this.

After their marriage the couple lived in Hut No. 62 Pennylands, Auchinleck from 1949-1951. Later they lived at 115 Dalsalloch, Auchinleck.

Maria Scott Donnelly Kuberski who was born in 1946. Maria married John McKissock Kiltie in 1968 in Auchinleck and died in 2016 aged 71years in Cumnock.

Theresa Anne Kuberski  who was born in 1949 in Auchinleck. Theresa married Lewis Gibson in 1973 in Cumnock and died in 2016 aged 67years in Cumnock.

Conrad Kuberski was born in 1960 in Auchinleck. He married Christine Alexander in 1969 at Catrine and died in 2001at Auchinleck.

Kazimierz Wacaw Korpalski

Kazimierz Wacaw Korpalski, who was known as Eddie, was a Polish soldier based at Pennylands Camp, Auchinleck.

Eddie was born on the 8th June 1925 at Warszawa, which is Polish for Warsaw, Macowieckie, Poland.  His parents were Wladyslaw Korpalski who was born in 1886 in Warsaw, Macowieckie and Anna Mlotkowska who was born in 1886 in the village of Wichorowo, Poland and who were married in Warsaw in 1907.

When Eddie was 22 years old he married local girl Jean Collins McBirnie at Lugar Parish Church.

Marriage Certificate:

On 28th May 1947 at Parish Church, Lugar, Kazimierz Korpalski, private, Polish Army, bachelor, Pennylands Camp, Auchinleck. Father:  Warslawa Korpalski, able seaman, deceased Mother: Malkalowska Korpalski ms [          ] deceased to Jean McBirnie age 20, bus conductress, spinster, 415 Brick Row, Lugar. Father: Andrew McBirnie, coalminer Mother: Mary McBirnie ms Wilson.

Jean Collins McBirnie was born on 16th October 1926 in Galston, Ayrshire. Her parents were Andrew Tait McBurnie, who was born in 1904 in Hurlford and died 3rd January 1979 in Old Cumnock and Mary Collins who was born 4th November 1904 in Lugar and died 14th April 1966 at 24 Glen Avenue, Cumnock.

From 1949-1952 Eddie and Jean lived in Hut No. 34A at Pennylands. They moved down to the Midlands in England, probably because of work. Their marriage broke down, they were divorced and they both married again. 

Jean married Keith H. Clarke in 1974 at Derby, England. Jean's eldest son lived in Australia and became engaged to be married. Their Engagement Notice was in "The Age", which is an Australian newspaper, on 21/12/1976.

O'Connell - Korpalski

The engagement is announced between Hazel, second daughter of Captain and Mrs Jean O'Connell of 'Tarameade', Toolem Vale and Scott eldest son of Mrs Jean Clarke of Derby, England and Mr. K. Korpalski of Staffordshire, England.

Jean and her husband Keith emigrated to Australia and both died there, Jean on 28th October 2020 in Melbourne and Keith on 4th May 2010 also in Melbourne.

Eddie married Elizabeth A. Hinnels in July 1975 at Swadlincote, Derbyshire and he died there in 1995.

Kasimierz Edward Parol

Kasimierz (aka Kazik) Edward Parol was a Military Policeman at Pennylands Camp. He was born in 1926 in Trabki, Warsaw. Trabki was a small village with a glass factory. In 1940, when Kazik was 14 years old, he worked for his brother-in-law and one day, after finishing work, he and his cousin were snatched by the Germans and sent to Germany to work. They both escaped from Germany and went over the Alps into Switzerland where they were interned because they had no papers. They escaped from Switzerland into France and Kazik joined the Polish Army.  He was only a young boy at the time. 

Kazik’s parents were Yana (Jan) Parola and Heleny Pilkour. Jan was born 1891 and died 1945 while Heleny was born 1891 and died 1956. Presumably in Poland.

Kazik met his future wife Elizabeth (Betty) McBride Ruddie at a local dance. Betty's father was Thomas Ruddie who was born in 1897 in Glasgow. Thomas's father was born in Ireland. Thomas died 19/11/1975 in Auchinleck. Betty's mother was Jeanie McCulloch who was born in 1902 and died 31/7/1965 in Auchinleck.  Kazik and Betty were married on 12th June 1947 at the Barony Church Hall, Auchinleck.

The first Polish soldiers to arrive in Pennylands were older and very mannerly. The second lot of Polish soldiers to arrive were a different generation. They were younger, boisterous, lacked the manners of the older Polish soldiers and were troublemakers. They were not as popular with the villagers as the older men were.  Kazik's job was to keep them in line.

Their unpredictability was proven at Kazik and Betty's wedding reception at the Barony Hall where things didn't go quite as planned. Three soldiers were heard arguing in the toilets there when one decided to shoot the other two. The result was that the wedding reception came to an abrupt halt before it even got started. The two wounded soldiers were taken to hospital and while this was happening the caterers took away all the food that Betty's grandfather had paid for. Here is Betty's story in her own words.

Many of the Polish soldiers, like Kazik, married and settled down with local girls but not all had happy endings. One friend of theirs, a Polish soldier, Zygfryd Nowak, would visit them but one evening after having supper with the family Zygfryd returned to Pennylands Camp and shot himself. Back home in Poland he had watched from a hiding place the Germans bringing his mother, father and brothers out of their house into their backyard and shooting them. He had nothing to go back to Poland for so he ended his life in Auchinleck. He died of gunshot wounds to the heart at Pennylands Camp on 22nd May 1945. He was the first Polish soldier to be buried in Auchinleck Cemetery.

Another two Polish soldiers from Pennylands Camp, Feliks Mirek and Rajmund Zielinski, who ate, against Kazik's advice, poisoned mushrooms, died in Ballochmyle Hospital in October 1947. They are buried in Cardonald Cemetery.

Kazik, who worked as a crane driver, and Betty had a long and happy life in Auchinleck, raised a family there and made trips back to Poland to visit Kazik's relatives. 

Walter Krone

Walter Krone was born 19/12/1923 in Wysoka, Federal Republic of Germany. He was a soldier with the Polish Forces and lived in Hut No. 229 Pennylands from 1949-1951.

According to the United States Social Security Applications Walter's parents were Paul Krone and Veronica Matuzek:

Walter Krone born 19/2/1923 Wysoka, Krs. R. Federal Republic of Germany, Father Paul Krone Mother Veronica Matuzek.

Walter married Joanna Conn Bunten in 1948 in Auchinleck, Ayrshire and in 1955 he is recorded as being a shop proprietor in Main Street, Auchinleck. His shop was at the bottom of Auchinleck Main Street and was locally referred to as 'The Pole's". He sold shoes.

He was friendly with another Polish soldier named Zenon Garn, a jeweller who lived in Blackpool. After he had visited Walter's house in Auchinleck late in 1955 £950 was found to be missing. Walter suspected that Garn had stolen the money and he reported it to the police. However the police could find no evidence that Garn was the thief.  Walter was convinced that Garn was guilty because he had heard stories about Garn freely spending lots of cash, so, accompanied by two other local men, went to Blackpool, bundled Garn into their car and brought him back to Auchinleck. They took what money they could find on Garn and handed it over to the local police. 

 Garn made a complaint against the three men who were then charged with false imprisonment by detaining him forcibly against his will and with causing him grievous bodily harm. The men pleaded not guilty at a trial at Lancaster Assizes in January 1956 and were subsequently acquitted.

A 32 year-old jeweller was kidnapped, beaten up and held prisoner for nine and a half hours on a nightmare car ride to Scotland, a court was told yesterday. The kidnapping was carried out by three men, one of whom believed that the jeweller had stolen from him, the prosecution alleged at Blackpool. THE ACCUSED, all from Ayrshire, are Walter Krone, 32 year old German shop-owner, of Main Street, Auchinleck; Alexander Stewart, 47, a telephonist, of Mill Square, Catrine; and David Bunten, 30, a miner, of Lamont Crescent, Cumnock.

                                                                      Resentment

THE JEWELLER, Zenon Garn, a Pole, of Woodstock Gardens, Blackpool, had been suspected of stealing £960 from the Krone home while he was on holiday there, said Mr. A.H. Bryant, prosecuting. Garn was cleared, but Krone was not satisfied. "He apparently took the view that the police had not done their duty, and this case is the result of his resentment against Garn". One of Krone's companions called for Garn in Blackpool and told him; "I am from the police. I want to ask you a few questions." The jeweller was persuaded to get into a car. Then Krone, who had been hiding in the front seat, showed himself.  Said Garn: "When I realised I was not going to the police station I opened the car door and shouted for help. Krone put his hand over my mouth". Near the Blackpool boundary he again opened the door and shouted to an oncoming car. "I was held half in and half out of the car and beaten up. The three rained blows on my mouth and my head and chopped blows on the back of my neck. I saw Bunten holding a hammer in his hand, and he said: 'See that, it's a hammer, and if you try anything I'll hit you with it'. 

                                                                        Searched

The car stopped in a side street, Krone leaned forward, put his hand in my pocket and took my wallet. He took out the money and counted it. Bunten searched me and took money from my trousers pocket. He counted it and found there was £119. Krone accused me of taking his money. I denied it and said: 'You might as well kill me and I will still deny it'. He then asked me to sign a statement that the £119 was part of his money. The car was restarted. I asked them what they intended to do with me. One said: 'Maybe we will kill you'. The car was driven off."

                                                                         Injuries

When they got to Auchinleck Garn asked to be taken to the police and Krone replied "The Blackpool police will not do anything but my police will". Garn was taken to the police station and later went to hospital, it was said. He was still being treated for his injuries. The three men denied at the police station that they took Garn to Scotland against his will. They were sent for trial accused of unlawfully imprisoning Garn and harming him.

Pole Kidnapped at Blackpool - ALLEGATION     from our Blackpool Correspondent

                                                                December 8 1955

A man was kidnapped in a Blackpool street, it was alleged at Blackpool Magistrates' Court yesterday, when three men from Scotland were sent for trial at Lancaster Assizes. They were allowed bail. The men were Walter Krone (32), shop proprietor, of Main Street, Auchinleck, Ayrshire, Andrew Whitelaw Stewart (47), telephonist, of Mill Square, Catrine, and David Conn Bunten (30), miner, of Lamont Crescent, Netherthird, Cumnock. The charge was that, on November 11 at Blackpool, they assaulted Zenon Garn and injuriously imprisoned him for nine and a half hours. Garn, a jeweller, lives at Woodstock Gardens, South Shore. Mr A.H. Bryant, prosecuting, said the alleged offence was formerly commonly known as kidnapping which, in common law, was also known as unlawful imprisonment. Garn was a Pole living at Blackpool, Krone was a German living in Auchinleck and the other two were friends of Krone. Krone was known to Garn, who went to stay at his house in August, said Mr. Bryant. In October it was alleged by Krone that £960, which had been concealed in a bedroom in his house, was missing. He reported it to the police and among the suspects were people who had stayed there in August. Police inquiries revealed no evidence against Garn. The prosecution said that Krone went to Blackpool with the other two accused as his companions. They went to a house asking for Garn. When he came to the door Garn was told "I am from the police. I want to ask you some questions". Garn was taken to a waiting motor car, added Mr Bryant, and was induced to get in.

According to the Lancaster Evening Post dated 28/1/1956 the jury was out for an hour and the three men were acquitted. Their lawyer Mr. C.Q. Henriques submitted there was not the slightest evidence they kidnapped Garn and that Krone had always held a genuine belief that Garn knew something about the missing money which included the life savings of his widowed mother-in-law. Summing up, Mr. Justice Gorman said the case had somewhat unusual features in that a criminal charge had been made against civilians for the alleged false imprisonment of another civilian against his will. He said that Krone and Garn were both former Polish soldiers, known to each other when serving with the Polish Forces in this country, where they both married and settled down.

Walter and Joanna had a daughter Margot Ann Krone who was born and died in 1960 in Auchinleck. They also had a son Paul who was born in 1963 at Ayr. The family moved to Florida possibly in the 1970s.

Walter died 23/4/1999 at Port St. Luce, Florida.
